February 2016: Eskom’s Kusile management congratulated ABB South Africa for its successful completion of factory acceptance tests (FATs) of the Balance-of-Plant (BOP) on Unit 1, which forms part of their execution of the Control and Instrumentation (C&I) project at Kusile Power Station.
The Group Executive for Group Capital, Abram Masango said, “We are encouraged by the achievement of this milestone in the project. It gives us confidence that our partner ABB is adhering to the original schedule and is on track to complete the project on time.”
“Kusile is important to Eskom and South Africa as a whole. When Eskom appointed ABB to execute the C&I contract, which is the brain of the power unit, it was critical to ensure schedule security and the seamless introduction of an alternative contractor for Kusile,” added Masango.
Eskom continues to execute its build programme that will bring much-needed power to support domestic growth. Kusile comprises six units of 800MW each with the first unit due to come on line in the second half of 2018.
In close collaboration with Eskom, SA Builder will be running continuous and ongoing updates on construction progress at Kusile, through to completion.
