Light Steel Frame training courses – JUNE 2016 – REGISTER NOW

The SA Institute of Steel Construction and SASFA, together with the University of Stellenbosch, will be offering two consecutive one-day training courses to assist practitioners to master the SANS code for LSFB in a short period of time, and to learn how to design thin gauge cold-formed steel structures. Both of the courses will qualify for CPD points.

Day 1: Code course – SANS 517 Light Steel Frame Building

SANS 517 Light Steel Frame Building was published by the SABS at the end of 2009 and updated in 2011 and 2013. A full day training course will be presented to assist practitioners to understand and quickly implement the standard.

All the facets of the standard will be covered by John Barnard (SASFA) and Mike Hull (Hull Consulting) – from foundations and the steel frame to floors, walls and roofs, including insulation and installation of services.

Mike received his B Eng and M Eng degrees from University of Pretoria. He is a professional engineer, and has been involved in LSFB over the past 6 years. John obtained his B Eng Civ and B Eng (HONS) Structural from University of Pretoria. He has been instrumental in establishing SASFA and the development of the LSFB industry in Southern Africa.

Who should attend?
The course is aimed at engineers, architects, quantity surveyors, developers, builders and
suppliers to this industry. CPD points apply.

Day 2: Cold-formed steel design (including the Direct Strength method) and structural design of LSF structures – for Engineers

In order to assist South African designers to understand the design of thin gauge cold-formed steel sections, Etienne van der Klashorst (Stellenbosch University) will present an introduction to cold-formed steel design, and the design of individual elements to SANS 10162:2. He will cover the fundamentals of plate buckling, torsion and warping stiffness, prediction of elastic buckling stresses, buckling modes, and the design capacities of cold-formed sections calculated using the Effective Width Method, as well as the new and easier Direct Strength Method of analysis.

Etienne received his B Eng and M Eng degrees from Stellenbosch University, where he is lecturing while studying for his doctorate in the field of cold-formed steel structures.
Mike Hull will cover the practical design principles of LSF buildings, starting with the design process and design criteria, and then dealing with floor systems, wall systems and roof and ceiling structures.

Who should attend?
All structural designers of cold formed steel structures
